Cead Mile Faite (100,000 Welcomes) to my web page about the McMAHAN surname.

This is my biological, or commonly called, birth-family. I was adopted out of the family as an infant. When I learned that I am a McMahan, I decided to make this my life's work to learn about my real family and help others make connections too. I am one of thousands of direct descendants of Robert and Catherine O'Brien McMahan that live in the USA.

Just a friendly reminder, these pages are only brief outlines of descendants and what I've learned so far of my incredibly interesting McMahan's. Also, I just simply didn't have room for everyone and everything here. I have highlighted my own direct line in red. I have 'everyone' that I know of with known details listed at this link: http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=irisheyes

Briefly About The McMahan's

The Coat Of Arms above is courtesy of Araltas.Com and is their intrepretation.

The McMahan name starts with the sons of Mahan, a 5th century King of Leinster. The name was variously spelled MacMahon or McMahon , Mahan , Mahan, McMahan when it was translated from the old Erse/Gaelic spelling phonetically into English spelling, but we are all the same family. In the 13th century the McMahan's resided mostly in County Clare and Wexford, but by the 1600's many lived in Meath and Kildare near Dublin, Ireland.

Robert MacMahon and his wife Catherine O'Brien MacMahon left Dublin, Ireland in 1746, bound for the State of Virginia in the USA. They were accompanied by their ten, some say twelve, sons. Robert MacMahon did not die at sea enroute to Virginia as originally thought (source). Catherine O'Brien MacMahon and most of his family settled in Augusta County, Virginia. Mrs. Catherine O'Brien MacMahon Cole worked as a housekeeper for David Stuart. She is given the surname Cole in some Augusta County records, which was probably her second husband. It is suspected that this second husband worked for David Stuart also. No record has been found of any children known from this second marriage.

Read More About The BYRD Family.
Archibald McMahan, II, and wife Elizabeth Byrd are my maternal biological 5th great grandparents.

More About Archibald McMahan, II:
At the time of their marriage, George Bird was living in the part of Buncombe Co., NC which later became Yancey Co., NC and Archibald McMahan, Jr. was living with his parents near Shield's Station, Middle Creek, Sevier Co., TN. Archibald Jr. soon established a Mule ranch and Pig farm in Pearl Valley near Jones Cove and usually included in Jones Cove Community in Sevier Co., TN. James Balford "Jim-Bally" McMahan told John McNulty Henry that he and all his brothers and sistors were born in Pearl Valley. Jones Cove, Sevier Co., TN. My Mother took down all granddad Henry's genealogical info including details from his father's family Bible and oral history from both of his grandfathers and his uncle Captain John Henry between 1934 and 1947, and gave typed copies of this info to, among others, her sister, Zola Spurgeon, and me. However, others in the family maintain that Wilson, the oldest child was born at the Byrd home in North Carolina. It was not uncommon in those days for a young bride to go home to mother to have her first child, so a NC birth place for Wilson is plausable but unproven. The rest of the children, despite Census records and other Genealogists claims, were undoubtedly born in Tennessee.
