More about the MALLOY / MALOY name and the location of Jura:

The surname MOLLOY, MULLOY and O'MOLLOY is the anglicized versions of names distinct from Irish names. The O MAOLMHUAIDH, from "maomauhidh" meaning Proud Chefain, were part of the northern Ui Neill, the southern branch of the large tribal grouping claiming descent from Naill of the Nine Hostages, the fifth century king who supposedly kidnapped St. Patrick to Ireland. They held power over a large part of what is now County Offaly, where the surname is still quite common. A second family were the O MAOIL AODHA, descendant of the devotee to (Saint) Aodh', from Moal, literally meaning "Bald". A reference to the distinctive tonsure sported by early Irish monks. As well as MOLLOY, this surname has been anglicized as MILEY and MILLEA. The name arose in east Connacht, in the Rosscommon/east Galaway region and remains numerous there today.

Origins of O'MOLLOY were in the County Roscommon and they were princes in the King's County.

The Isle of Jura is due north of Belfast: 56 degrees Latitude, 6 degrees Longitude. Jura is seperated by a relatively narrow Channel from Islay, which is southermost of the inner Hebrides. The northern coast of Ireland is clearly seen from Islay. The two islands then and now would be an easy days sailing.

Some of the above is contributed by: Roy Eastes 17 August 1998

The name does not switch to the current spelling Malloy until the late 18th and early 19th century. Many now spell our name as Maloy with a single "L". Whichever way it is spelled, we are undoubtably the same family. :o)

MY NOTES: Most everything here is by Word Of Mouth at this time, so, please be sure to research very carefully before taking this as 'gospel'. All are connected to my family of "Wiregrass" Georgia. My connection is that I am a direct descendant of Emma Elizabeth "Lizzie" Maloy. She married Alexander Young "Alex" McCall. I descend via their daughter Maudie Jane McCall , who in turned married David Madison Keith . Maudie and David Keith are my paternal biological grandparents. I have clearly marked my direct lineage in red.

SPECIAL NOTE ADDED 02 September 2005: I have learned from at least five of my MALOY cousins that a very deadly cancer runs through the MALOY family. It's known as GIST (Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors). It is treatable with chemo and medications but must be caught as early as possible! If you, or a loved one, has suffered from a mysterious ailment, please get medical care immediately! And warn other MALOY descendants about this apparently inheritable disease. Maybe this cancer can be stopped in it's tracks before others die needlessly.
God bless.
