A Little About the Koethe Surname

The name KOETHE is German and the Coat of Arms contains Black shield with a silver eagle displayed. Spelling variations include: Kthe, Koeth, Kothe, Koth, Koethe, Kth, Dael, Kothmann and many more.

First found in Prussia, now known as Germany, where the name emerged in medieval times as one of the notable families of the region.

Koethe comes from Kothe which is the small house of the charcoal burner in the Harz mountains.

Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: settlers who travelled to the New World and established themselves along the eastern seaboard of the United States and Canada in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Last Will and Testament of JOHN HERMANN "Herman" KOETHE, 25 Mar 1931

State of Texas }
County of Tarrant }

I, J. H. KOETHE, of the County of Tarrant, State of Texas, being in good bodily health and of sound and disposing mind and memory, and fully realizing the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death, and being desirous of settling my worldly affairs while I possess the capacity and strength to do so, hereby make and publish and declare this my Last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all other wills heretofore made by me, that is to say:

First: I direct that the expenses of my last sickness, including the expenses of my funeral, be first paid, and all my just debts next paid in full.

Second: To my grandson, BOBBIE KOETHE, I give and bequeath the sum of Five Hundred ($500.00) Dollars in money.

Third: All the remainder of my estate, real, personal or mixed of whatsoever kind, or wheresoever situated, I give and bequeath to my six children; EMILIE KOETHE FOWLER, JOHN KOETHE, FRANK KOETHE, CARRIE KOETHE SMITH, LENORA KOETHE, and RICHARD D. KOETHE, share and share alike.

Fourth: I hereby nominate and appoint my good friend, BEN T. MERRITT, my sole Executor of this my Last Will and Testament, and direct that no bond be required of him, and that no action be had in the Probate Court under this will other than the filling of an inventory and appraisement, and list of claims as required by law.

In testimony of all of which, I hereunto set my hand, at Handley, Texas, in the presence of R. B. SMITH and RAY E. McCLESKEY, witnesses this 25th day of March, A.D. 1931.

J. H. Koethe (signed)

The above and foregoing Last Will and Testament of J. H. KOETHE is now here, at the request of said J. H. KOETHE, and in his presence witnessed by us in the presence of each other, and we, at the request of the aforesaid, hereto subscribe our names as witnesses, in the presence of said J. H. KOETHE, and in the presence of each other. Witnesses:
R. B. Smith (signed)
Ray E. McCleskey (signed)

My note: There seemed to be some confusion as to Mr. H. J/F/D Koethe middle initial. Sometimes he is "H. J." and sometimes he is "H. J." and other times I've seen "H. D.".

The BOBBIE KOETHE mentioned in his grandfather's Will was a "minor" at the time of JOHN HERMANN KOETHE's death August 1932. Bobbie was actually Robert Louis "Bobbie" KOETHE b. 01 JUN 1927 in Summit County, Ohio d. 29 JUL 2005 buried: Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Silverstreet, Newberry County, South Carolina. He was son of FRED KOETHE b. 1895 and wife MABEL DAUGHERTY b.1899; and married Cynthia LAKE 1952 in Broward County, Florida.

HERMAN KOETHE, year 1890, occupation "laborer", address is listed as 99 Dawson Alley, A in: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania City Directories, 1888-1892. Neither HERMAN nor HERMANN KOETHE is found in the 1890 Pennsylvania Census at this time.

"HERMANN KOETHE" immigrated from the port of Bremen, Germany to New York (July 24, 1871) on the Ship Deutschland (port of New York) with his father, mother and siblings. Many other Koethe's immigrated at different times and settled in Texas, Indiana, Wisconsin, etc.
Source: the book "New Homes In A New Land: German Immigration To Texas, 1847-1861" and "Germans to America, 1854 - 1871".

Miscellaneous KOETHE info I have found:
HUGO KOETHE, physician, shows up with HERMAN KOETHE a few times. HUGO KOETHE (age 14, b. about 1854) immigrated from Grossen, Germany to New York in 1868 on the Ship Deutschland (port of New York) with LOUIS KOETHE (age 33, b. about 1835). This LOUIS KOETHE was HUGO's brother. Hugo Koethe's occupation is listed as "Barber" in 1870 Allegheny County, PA Census Records. HUGO is later listed then a "Physician" in 1890 New Hampshire Census Records.

No marriage certificate was found in Allegheny County, PA. Could have actually been purchased in Washington County, PA, and married in Allegheny County?

Mom loved animals, especially dogs. Unfortunately, I have very few memories of Mom because Don would not permit anyone speaking of her. But the one I do have is of her stopping our old faded green Volkswagon "bug" to help a wounded dog in the street just outside Parkway Junior High in Titusville. I do believe she was in frail health by then. But even with that infirmaty and also with their tiny bank acount, she had offered to take the animal to a veterarian. It was too late though for the poor little dog. I remember how sad she felt all the way home. She was so thoughtful and kind. Another vivid memory I have is of when I was very little. I was feeling carsick in the back seat and Mom just stopped at a strangers house and knocked on the front door asking for a class of water for me. She was so sweet about it too. Isn't it funny that even when other memories fade, the tender memories that one can recall after so many years. She was really special.

Inspite of her increasing physical difficulties, Mom was very strongwilled. There was nothing weak about her mind! Her wrists were very tiny and delicate. Mom loved Jesus Christ and apparently to read The Holy Bible frequently. I have found many passages underlined with notes from her studies. She also had a large collection of costume jewelry I "inherited" after her death in 1966. My dear Mother died when I was 10 years old. I have pretty much raised myself since the age of 10. There was no real parental guidance in the home after she died. My 'father' just didn't seem to care about anything or anyone except himself. But God is truly merciful and I am grateful for the ten years of peace that I did have and the gentle memories of a loving, caring Mother.
